COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW: Fiat Punto Nuova ELX Speedgear

In this blog entry, I'm doing a COMPREHENSIVE review on Fiat Punto Nuova 1.25 ELX Speedgear.
THis subject's on sale in Malaysia from 2000 to 2003, about 400 units +/- made their way to
Malaysia thanks to TORINO Motors. About A quarter (1/4) of the 400 +/- units were Punto 1.8 HGT 3dr (photo below).

The Punto's resale value in Malaysia are as follows:

Year:........2000.....2001.....2002.....2003
Price (RM)...13.8k....16k......19k......23k

Note this is Averaged asking price. Actual price depends on Mileage, Engine and gearbox Conditions,
Bodywork, Trim AND Lastly, it's Buyer's market since this is a RARE and COLD car in Malaysia (ie.
Buyers determined the pricing).

As usual, I don't have a car to test and brag/write about.

ALL ISS NOT LOST: I'm dishing out 1 Main review from Parker's UK, Specifications and Colour choices and top it off with a WHOOPING 15 owner's reviews...

Fiat Punto Hatchback (99-03) ***--

PROS   * Attractive inside and out, generous cabin space, easy to park.
CONS   * Ride and handling sometimes lack composure. Inconsistent build quality

With lively engines, unusual Speedgear sequential transmission and a funky TV
ad campaign the second generation Punto was aimed at younger drivers. It is
one of the best-looking hatchbacks around and exudes cheeky Italian charm.
It's spacious, practical, easy to drive, safe and cheap. Reliability was
patchy and although most problems have been fixed under warranty, this is a
car for which an aftermarket warranty makes sense.

Performance  ***--

All are adequate for all kinds of driving. Most popular is the 1.2-litre Fire
unit which manages to feel quite nippy. The 1.9JTD is probably the most
desirable for its mix of strong performance and exceptional economy.

 Handling ***1/2--

Easy to drive, well-controlled in or out of town, suspension takes care
of the potholes well and doesn't roll too much in corners. Power steering
has light 'City' mode that makes parking a doddle.

Comfort   ***--

Good head and legroom, supportive seats when new, but lots of wind/road
noise on the motorway. The three door looks good but can be tricky to
get Grandma in and out of.

Practicality  ***--
Luggage space could be better for the class, but split-fold rear seat
s are available on most models, adding versatility.

Equipment  ***--

Later cars are much better and there are lots of special editions.
Speedgear is a six- and seven-speed sequential auto option on 1.2 ELX
and Sporting models.

Behind the wheel  ***--

Looked funky when launched, but starting to look dated now. Controls
are reasonably logical and straightforward to use. Easy to get comfy,
but older cars can have saggy seats.

Safety  **1/2---

Standard equipment wasn't always brilliant, passenger and side airbags
were optional, but a revision in 2002 was enough to get a four star
Euro NCAP rating. All models had an immobiliser. Alarm on the HGT only.

Reliability  *1/2----
Nothing major, but plenty of niggling faults that cost in both time and
money to get fixed. Inconsistency means you could get a good one but
plenty of 'Friday cars' abound.

Car check problem points

Body: Paint chips easily, door seals can fail leading to water leaks.

Engine/Gearbox: Can misfire when starting from cold.

Other: Premature rear suspension wear, electronics fail, so check radio,
 electric windows and lights.

Buying used ****-
Huge choice of cars. Many are 1.2s - the 16v unit is worth paying more for.
Three-door Punto still looks good, later cars were better built and better
equipped. Don't pay too much, most were bought cheap when new.

Selling  ***--
Strong demand but very price sensitive. Service history helps it sell faster,
but isn't worth a lot more money.

Running costs  ***--

Good fuel economy even from the 'hot' HGT engine. Servicing, insurance and
parts costs are reasonable, but you might need to budget for some repairs -
Punto isn't the most reliable car in class by some distance.

Estimated fuel cost for 10,000 miles/year:

£975 to £1575

The estimated fuel cost figure is designed to give you a rough idea of how
much this model will cost to fuel each year, so you can compare between cars.
It's calculated by using the combined drive cycle (town centre and motorway
driving) and the average fuel price. It's based on the following cost-per-
litre: petrol 112p, diesel 123p, and LPG 57p. Prices are updated annually.

OWNER 1:

2001 Fiat Punto ELX review from Greece

"Best buy in the small hatch 1200-1300cc market"
What things have gone wrong with the car?

We have encountered zero problems until this day, and the car worked great even during a 7 day snow storm with

-10C temperatures.

We never expected such a great performance from an Italian car.

But its true.
General comments?

We drove the Fabia and Corsa, but none matches the pleasure the Punto cabin provides to its occupants.

The Punto is by far the car that makes a cloudy day shine.

Engine as you all know gives a true 81hp due to new settings, but its still one of the best compared to Clio 1.2 (16v) /Fabia 1.4 (8valves) and Opel Corsa 1.2 (16v).

The car has one and only set back and that's road noise when the surface is off poor quality. Yet on the motor way travelling at 140kms/hour speed the overall noise intruding inside the cabin is very low, so long journeys are no problem.

All controls inside cabin, compared with rivals are superior, seats have no match in anywhere, but the mid-size category.

Car shock absorbing level is almost at a "sport level" and with the right 185/60/13" set of tyres you have a winner on your hands.

We drove the new ibiza 1.2 and even challenged it on the road, Its no match for the 16V 1.2 Punto even the ELX.

The Italians have done a great work.

OWNER 2:

2001 Fiat Punto ELX review from UK and Ireland

"A dream of a car at a ridiculous price! Buy one!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?

Washer jets were split - replaced under warranty.

A few trim items were missing, looks like the dealer was using the my car as the parts bin!
General comments?

This car is fantastic!

Trip computer is very good, average miles to the gallon never below 45!!

Handling is superb, no body roll at all.

Steerimg is very accurate and feels very good.

The 'City' mode makes parking a doddle.

The seats are really supportive and feel as though they are from a BMW!

Cheap tax, cheap insurance, cheap to run, high level of equipment, a delight to drive. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT???

OWNER 3:

2000 Fiat Punto Sporting Speedgear review from UK and Ireland

"Excellent car, shame about the service and faults"
What things have gone wrong with the car?

Water ingress from either bulkhead or behind wings. Fiat cannot decide! Very wet carpets and lots of condensation inside.

Fiat are refusing to fix this under warranty as water ingress is not part of the warranty. This will probably cost in the region of £400.

ECU to be replaced as engine light keeps coming on in freezing weather.

Faulty micro switch in gearbox caused engine light to come on and brake pedal to cause a relay switching noise from centre console.

Rear spoiler and near side door bump strip needed to be re-glued. Spoiler after six months and door strip after two years.

Windscreen wipers making electric crackling noise at the end of travel. Have had this adjusted twice under warranty, both times around Christmas as the weather got colder.
General comments?

Fantastic car to look at, sit in, and drive. It does not feel like a 1.2 engine and friends have always guessed it has a 1.6 until I tell them.

The speedgear gearbox is a dream and makes perfect gear shifting into the reach of even the worst driver!

The 7 gears available in the sporting speadgear gearbox means that if you want to race around for a while you can pull away from a number of cars. There is no real drop in revs because the gear ratios are so close together.

The handling could be better as it does seem to wallow around the bends. Nothing that an upgrade to the suspension wouldn't fix, and it does cry out to be lowered to frame the lovely alloys.

OWNER 4:
2000 Fiat Punto Sporting 16v review from UK and Ireland

"A sensible well engineered 'Sporting' Punto"
What things have gone wrong with the car?

Body side rubbing strips started to become unstuck shortly after taking delivery - these were replaced under warranty and are now satisfactory.

Steering wheel had a small cut mark on the leather cover - replaced under warranty.
General comments?

This car has modern dynamic styling which the opposition cannot match - currently.

The interior is spacious, comfortable and well styled.

The ride can be choppy over hard surfaces although I've noticed it's starting to settle a bit now I've done over 10000 miles in it.

I would describe the car as 'nippy' rather than fast - the fuel economy is excellent even when driven hard - and the insurance rating also reasonable.

I have found my Fiat dealer to be first class - no complaints whatsoever.

Overall I would say this car is ideal for most driving conditions - enough performance for sensible driving coupled with excellent fuel economy - total reliability - and cheap service costs.

The HGT is faster - but that comes with poor fuel economy and double insurance rating - not a wise buy for me personally.

Its a pity more UK small car owners weren't prepared to look at the Punto to see what they are missing out on.

OWNER 5: 2001 Fiat Punto Sporting review from UK and Ireland
"Stylish, economic, sporty!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?

Rust on a spot weld behind tailgate hinge, repaired under warranty.

Rubber hose on Air Con unit replaced under warranty after argument at garage (this is a known fault and a different design is put on).

Gear cable adjusted.
General comments?

Despite the problems above, all fixed under warranty, here is a little review of my car:

What a little gem! I was on the look out for a small, economical yet sporty car and was having trouble finding one. But when my friend turned up in his new Punto Sporting, I just had to have one.

The exterior styling is sharp and fresh, with mine coming in a clean looking and cool as ice "Astral Blue". The small changes to the exterior of the standard 3dr Punto (small rear wing, small side skirts, excellent alloys all sharpen up the European edge of the car.

The interior is very impressive. The sports seats look very smart, not over the top, and are very comfortable and supportive to match, with height, tilt, slide and lumber adjustments. The interior is of a very high quality finish, ahead of most other cars I looked at (fiesta, corsa, fabia, clio). The on board computer is excellent, and helps you keep driving as economical as possible if that's what you want.

I've had it up to 68mpg, OUTSTANDING, although 50 around town is more like the norm.

I was wary of getting a fiat because of past quality issues, but this is excellent, very well put together and very solid, with 8 yr anti corrosion.

The power from the 1247 cc 16v motor and six speed transmission is excellent, great acceleration and cruising is very comfortable.

The car is very safe, with high levels of grip and ABS as standard.

There is a button which reduces engine power and makes the steering unbelievably light, excellent for parking and the city.

The sound system is pretty special too with a sub woofer and 6 cabin speakers as standard, as does remote central locking. Mine also has Air Con.

I would definately buy another, well done Fiat!

Owner 6: 2001 Fiat Punto Sporting review from UK and Ireland
"Thrifty budget fun with typical Turin build quality"
What things have gone wrong with the car?

Gear linkage needed replacing at 52,000 miles.

Radiator fan needs replacing at 70,000 miles.

Rust appearing on roof - although I though these cars were galvanised?

Brakes continue to squeak and do not feel positive, even though Fiat cannot find fault, and charge me each time for cleaning.

Annoying squeaks and rattles coming from the interior while driving.

Sunroof rattles.

There seems to be interaction between the lights, as a warning light comes on when braking with dipped beams.

Remote central locking has packed up.

General comments?

Lovely car to drive and averages around 48mpg due to its thrifty 1.2 16v engine and 6 speed gear box - which with a power to weight ratio (about 85bhp), gives good performance - although it's certainly not a motorway cruiser.

Good handling in all conditions, although due to the sports suspension, it can be quite tiring to drive on long journeys.

Mechanical build quality and interior plastics are good; however I do get annoying rattles and creaks - vehicle electrics need consideration.

Owner 7: 2001 Fiat Punto ELX review from Malaysia
"I'm loving it!!!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

My steering motor start making rattling noise after 10k km. Replaced by dealer.

Battery run out fast (at 20k km)

Else is normal wear and tear.
General comments?

For NA 1.2 range, the car is consider powerful.  The Speedgear Gearbox is superb, very fast changing and the automatic shift-up is good.

I really love this car and will recommend to others.

Owner 8: 2001 Fiat Punto Sporting review from UK and Ireland
"A stylish, reliable and enjoyable car to drive!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing has gone wrong since I bought the car.

General comments?

I didn't set out to buy a Punto tough I've been driving a friends Punto all last summer in Italy - that car was excellent.

So I found myself with a 33,000 2001 Punto Sporting. I've now driven 1500 miles and can say that the car is excellent, stiff suspension, but that's because it's a sports set up.

1st through fourth gears are great - fast - but 5th & 6th are just for cruising. If you don't have momentum going up hill its quickly 6,5,4 the newer 1.4 probably copes better here. But then I don't expect miracles from a 1.2 engine. I am happier that I get a little over 50 mpg.

The bucket seats are VERY comfortable, leather steering wheel is great, so is the firmness of the PAS, six gears excellent. Visibility and and maneuverability fine. Wide profiles stick like glue to the road, excellent cornering.

As for the styling a real eye catcher - my Punto is in metallic burnt orange - looks fabulous. Nice interior, orange back lit everywhere at night its very restful and easy to see controls.

Stereo, well haven't used the cassette player, but the radio is A1+ Blaupunkt as is the multi-changer which is nicely fitted and easy to use. The factory installed woofler & 6 speakers are excellent. Top marks.

What else can I say, drives beautifully, economical, looks great, very comfortable, reliable to date - and yes, now I would look favourably at buying a FIAT in the future.

Owner 9: 2003 Fiat Punto Dynamic 16v Speedgear review from UK and Ireland
"A joy to drive, lively and fun"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Absolutely nothing.
General comments?

I was initially wary about going for an automatic, but my fears proved totally unfounded. The Continuously Variable Transmission is a joy to drive. It is instantly responsive and extremely smooth.

Even in Economy mode, I seldom use any other, the car is very quick and the engine is a great improvement on the 8 valve engine of my previous model.

Fuel economy is excellent 50+ mpg is easily obtainable on a long journey.

Of course it's not perfect road noise is intrusive and the indicator warning is too quiet, so with a noisy cabin a greater problem than it should be.

Owner 10: 2003 Fiat Punto Mk2 Dynamic review from Greece

"A cheap car that is even more cheaply made"
What things have gone wrong with the car?

Many things have gone wrong.

In fact they were wrong the moment it left the factory:

Handbrake does not apply properly.

Passenger door hinge misaligned from the factory, so the door sticks slightly when you try to open it.

Buckles of safety belts of rear seats were installed wrong from the factory!!!

Driver seat rattles.

Clutch pedal rattles.

Mysterious refusal of the engine to start. Initially blamed on the inertial cut off valve, later attributed to faulty spark plugs.

Misfires sometimes when going up a steep road.

Battery dead in three weeks.
General comments?

Once picked from the official Fiat dealership run out of gas after 200 meters!!! Had to push it to near gas station. Stingy dealership.

Worked for 114 km after mysteriously refusing to start. Towed to dealership. There it is fixed, and I am told it was the inertial fuel cut off valve. So I pick it up and go for a ride in my brand new punto. However, 29 km after that, the car breaks down again (in the same day it was supposed to have been repaired). At a total of 153 km it is towed for the second time to the dealership. This time they admit it was the fact that it had run out of gas initially that damaged the spark plugs (so they said) and repair it. The car has been working since, but sometimes the engine clearly misfires (unacceptable in a brand new car).

The most recent failure was that the battery died. It has worked for in three whole weeks!!! That must be a record of reliability for a Fiat.

But also the car handles very well, but it is a bit underpowered. The interior plastics look decent and the seats are comfortable. It is also very roomy and has good luggage space. However tyre noise does get in the cabin more than it should.

Bottom line: A cheap car that is even more cheaply made. Don't buy a Fiat unless you like to say that you have a brand new car that is almost every week at the dealership to get repaired (and let us not forget that while it is there, YOU DON'T HAVE A CAR).

Note: All the drivers of the salvage companies (like the AA, RAC, etc) I have talked to said that Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo and Rover are their best customers. Their worst? Well it's easy. The Japanese models of course.

Owner 11: 2004 Fiat Punto active sport review from UK and Ireland
"Love - hate relationship with my punto!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?

Cooling fan was coming on from a cold start.

I am now on my 3rd horn, the previous 2 stopped working!

New slave cylinder for clutch to stop a rather irritating "clicking" noise when the clutch was released.

Starting problems - has failed on me a few times although 99% of the time it is fine, however there are a lot of bumps and rattles when starting from cold.

Irregular revs - they drop very very slowly - fiat admit it has a fault, but don't know what it is... surely that's why all cars have a warranty is it not?

Blowing exhaust - getting gradually worse!

Windscreen washer jets packed up.

General comments?

Quick for a 1.2 - the 16v version is a lot quicker than the standard 8 valve believe me! It is also quicker than an equivalent corsa as I had one as a hire car and I noticed it was a lot slower straight away, the Punto is a very light car however which certainly helps!!

I like the steering, its very direct, but there is a fair bit of body roll so don't try and go around any corners too quickly.

Have had a handful of problems in its first 19,000 miles, nothing too major, but still very annoying.

Seats are quite comfortable and are fairly good on long journeys.

I will never buy another punto I don't think, I do really like the car, but I am forever wondering what will go wrong next, and also the depreciation is just ridiculous - bought new 18 months ago for £9000, now worth £4000, what a joke!

Owner 12: 1999 Fiat Punto Sporting review from UK and Ireland
"Great little sporty hatch and not too bad to insure"
What things have gone wrong with the car?

I have had the car for just over a year now and haven't had any real problems to date. The brake disks may need replacing soon, as they are stopping to judder when you brake hard. Local mechanic said this was just the disks out of line or may need new disks.
General comments?

The Punto Sporting is a great car, lively performance and quite cheap to insure, it is a group 7. Handles very well, I have thrown it round a few corners and its really stuck to the road. Top speed I have reached is approx. 115 - 120 mph, that was foot to the floor. Interior is nice and seats are very comfortable.

Owner 13: 2000 Fiat Punto  review from Iceland

"Stay away from Punto!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?

Head gasket blew 3 months after I got it.

Thermostat and water pumps needed to be changed one and a half years later.

Some unidentified problem causing misfiring during cold weather. Switched airflow sensor, but the problem remains. Neither the dealer nor my garage can identify it.
General comments?

Pros:

It's so comfortable to drive; the seats are great.

Steering is like a breeze. I steer with my index finger.
Spacious both in the front row and in the boot.

Very economical. I get c.a. 15km per liter driving in town (good traffic here).

But.

Cons:

Breakdowns are like daily routines.

Unidentifiable cause of misfiring makes it impossible to drive during winter and spring over here.

So it's a cheap summer toy at the best. Not something you can count on as an automobile.

Owner 14: 2000 Fiat Punto ELX 16v review from UK and Ireland

"Good little run around.."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Electric Power Steering had gone very lumpy several times. Motor got replaced under warranty. And again! Still lumpy so Fiat looked at it again an they said water/condensation must have got into the motor somehow. they removed the dash board and found a leak. in the process they caught the Air con pipe an caused the gas to leak. They just regassed it. Leaked out again an they replaced the pipe.

Had rear shockers replaced after 400 miles. (I owned from new...)

Handbrake mounting under the car came lose. Got welded back up by Fiat.

Slight misfire at idle. Fiat say "its OK" but think its the Lambda Probe...

Offside rear suspension arm came lose!!

General comments?

The car is seriously economical. I'm averaging 68MPG from it via motorways AND town driving! Cracking handling and performance too! And the ELX gets a decent stereo and AMP in the boot!

Owner 15:A NEGATIVE and SARCASTIC one...

2000 Fiat Punto ELX review from UK and Ireland
"Hell on wheels... I now know what FIAT stands for - Fix It Again Tomorrow!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?

Electrical powered steering failure at 32,000 miles.

Head gasket at 34,000 miles.

Wiper arms fell off and needed replacing 3 times - I gave up trying to get them repaired properly and tied the arms on with shoelaces - (it did a better job)!Wiper motor also failed 3 times.

Exhaust fell off twice.

Front headlights replaced twice due to misting.

Dashboard lights flickered when using the foot brakes.

Driver side door fell off due to faulty hinges, made loud "cracking" noise after repair each time I opened it.

Central locking failed.

Electric windows failed.
Peculiar gurgling noise from engine which FIAT could not sort out.

General comments?

Would never have another one and definitely wouldn't recommend it nor wish it upon my worst enemy!

Dealers were very helpful when trying to sell, but aftercare was appalling - they couldn't have cared less.

Comment 1: by Aircrew:

I'm contemplating whether or not I should invest in a 2nd hand Fiat Punto Nuova 1.3 as a family friend of mine had just bought 3 units of 2nd hand ones lately! The family's dad is really into it..and liked the car very much ..so he bought one for himself, one for the daughter..and one for the son-in-law! Sadly, the son-in-law wasn't me!

Comment 2: bt thrace:

the punto is a great car! i got mine some time back from mlm. After reading through the forum i decided it was a good first italian car to start with. Only 1.2 but good power for city driving. Handles well and goes easily to 150km/h on the highways daily. FC is good too! Better than my previous myvi (sometimes i think better than my kancil). Of course maintenance is slightly more expensive than japanese but it's worth it!
Comment 3: Bravosx:
Any car needs maintenance at some point of time.
If you bought a unit from an ignorant owner who just pumps petrol and jalan, then that's very bad.

The Nuova is very reliable. Any vehicle with an auto tranny needs periodical maintenance. Same goes for this model.
I reckon the only two things that you need to look at on the Nuova would be the electrical power steering and the engine mounting (top unit). Other than that it's a pretty simple care.

Buy one off a private owner who maintains the car well. If from used car then it's 50/50 I guess.

[added by firadaniel]
Yup, and Go for it,

Nouva is a very reliable car as long as u taken care of the services and wear & tear parts. Make sure you got the service background records...
My bella has touch 160k km and the gearbox is still superb smooth like new...

my major repair so far is power steering motor, fuel filter and mounting... others is just service and small wear and tear...

Comment 4: by Chiapheng:
hi,
go get a nuova..i have driven 1 for the last 4 years and it has been great. i bought it second hand used 2 years. Previous owner had above average maintenance of car with all records. Overall a reasonable car to maintain in terms of cost. Good on petrol mileage, oil and filter only RM130, tax only RM72, insurance about RM500, 14 inch tyres at RM175 each, timing belts RM500. But unlike jap cars, i think you need to be constantly on the dot on servicing and maintenance.

Not without issues though. So far high tension cable leaked electricity. Replacement about RM110. Battery died in 8 months(got free replacement) may be due to faulty battery or car eats them up. Not sure. Wipers had some issue that stop wiping at one time. But problem went away by itself after couple of months.

But the satisfaction outways the few issues. It is a practical car with lots of storage place. Easy to park, drive around traffic clogged city.

COMMENT 5: by galileo:
ok, how's this? my stock 10 year old nouva just outran the golf GTi a coupla weeks ago(tun razak/kuching/semantan). not that i wanted to race, i needed to get to poslaju asap. but itu brader ingat gua mau race..sapa suruh..padan muka..makan asap. get the nouva!
