How to do Lowlights at Home

Are you bored with the way your hair looks? Do you want to change their appearance a wee bit but not overtly as hair highlights do? If yes, you have your solution in hair lowlights. Unlike highlights, which give a very dramatic look to a person, hair lowlights enhance the natural beauty of the hair, add depth to them and provide excellent gray coverage. And the best part is that you do not have to spend a lot of money on getting them done in salons. You can apply them easily at home itself! Scroll down to know how to do lowlights at home.

Tips on How to do Lowlights at Home

Step 1
Shampoo your hair two days before you plan to doing lowlights at home. This way you are giving enough time to the natural oils to build up again on the hair and the scalp. The chemicals in hair colors are so strong that if you apply them directly on clean, washed hair, there is a possibility that the hair might get damaged. So, to avoid that, shampoo two days before doing highlights and lowlights at home.

Step 2
Choose the hair dye for doing lowlights very carefully. Ideally, for a more natural look, your hair color should not be more than one or two shades darker or lighter than your natural hair color. However, if you are in an experimentation mode and want to do something dramatic, you can choose hair color shades which are three or even four shades different then your natural hair color. According to beauty experts, for blonde hair, lowlights with copper and gold look good. For women with dark brown hair, hair colors with red, plum or copper tinge suit better. You may further go to hair color ideas.

Step 3
When you are just beginning with adding lowlights at home, change into old clothes as the hair color can stain fabrics permanently. Also, to avoid hair color from staining your skin, apply Vaseline all around your hairline.

Step 4
For all those who want to know how to apply lowlights at home, start with clipping the hair on top of your head. This will leave only a small number of hair at the back, which have to be further divided with an acrylic comb into small sections, before the application of the hair color.

Step 5
Read the instructions given on the kit and prepare the lowlight color mixture accordingly. Once the mixture is ready, start applying it on the hair with the help of the coloring applicator. The applicator should be placed around one fourth of an inch away from the scalp. The color should be applied from near the scalp to the end of the hair, never the other way round.

Step 6
Take a section of hair, not wider than half an inch, on which you want to apply lowlights. Apply the hair color with the applicator on this section in the same manner as mentioned above, while keep the rest of the hair clipped. Similarly, take small-small sections and apply lowlights for hair at home. If you desire a natural look, the lowlights should be applied slightly away from each other and never near the parting of your hair. Once the back of the hair is done, do the highlights in the same manner on the hair on top of your head.

Step 7
Let the color remain on hair for as long as indicated in the instructions. After the stipulated time, rinse the hair with water till the excess hair color is removed. Most color kits come with their own hair care products like shampoos and conditioners, so make sure you apply these on your hair in the end.

Isn't applying lowlights at home quiet easy? One word of caution though, always do the allergy test first as mentioned in the instructions manual to avoid any mishaps! So, if you want to add depth to your hair and make them look trendy at the same time, go with lowlighting!
