Does Your Classic Car Club Have an App for Your Members and Fans Yet?

If you run a nonprofit group such as an automotive classic car club then you need to be in touch with all of your members and fans. You need a very good website with a forum and a blogging network, and this can be done using perhaps the Ning Blog Network (you can Google that) and a decent "php forum" in conjunction with your website. You will also need to engage your members using social networks such as Twitter, and perhaps Facebook.

Now I understand that many people that own classic cars are of the baby boomer crowd, and they are perhaps the least likely to participate on social networks, but I guarantee you they will be interested if it involves their first love, their classic car. Further, it is recommended that you download one of the classic car apps from The Apple Store, or from the Android App website, perhaps both. There are several good ones. They will alert all your members when you are having a meeting, as well as several apps which alert them to classic car auctions, blue book values, and available parts.

Classic car clubs need to be thinking in the future, even though they are driving in the past. It is amazing when you merge the two how much you can do, things which you could have never done before. I can remember rebuilding my first classic car (1954 Chevy Truck) and there was no Internet, and chasing parts meant rummaging through hundreds and hundreds of acres in various junkyards. Trying to accumulate the parts I needed using a pair of vise grips, channel locks, small crowbar, and WD-40 to get the rust off. Things just aren't that way anymore, as you can order parts online on eBay, and through classic car online networks.

My advice to you is not to be shy when it comes to harnessing this technology, and it doesn't mean that you need to have your members put additional holes in the center console to hold an iPad with a GPS app. You can still leave the eight track player in the center console of your 1959 Stingray, but everything else about your car club should keep up with our information age, and you should take advantage of all the social networking tools to help your car club prosper and grow.

Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it. If you have any other great suggestions for future articles, please shoot me an e-mail, let's talk.

Fiero Problems

For those of you who don't know, I drive a 1984 Pontiac Fiero, and I love it. You should also know that it isn't exactly perfect.

I was driving home one evening, when all of a sudden my car shut off. I pulled over, popped the hood and started poking around, acting like I knew what I was doing. For a guy who isn't a great trouble shooter yet, I did a pretty good job locating a problem that would explain the break down.

The alternator belt had snapped. Without the alternator, the car couldn't run for very long. That made it difficult to get to the shop. As did the fact that my car was smoking uncontrolably.  In a car that was recalled for catching fire, a smoking motor is quite scary.

Anyway, we had the car towed to the shop, and we got the alternator belt replaced. Somehow, that was supposed to stop the overheating problem. I would try to explain that, but I'd just make a fool of myself.

Today I got the "okay" to come pick up the Fiero. The car fired right up and everything seemed fine. I got it about half way home, and then it overheated. Sheesh.

When your car breaks down on the way home from the shop, it's hard not to get depressed.

We were able (eventually) to get it back to the shop. It's still there.

This is NOT the first bad experience, I've had with my car, and it won't be the last. However, soon I'll get my car back from the shop. It won't be perfect, but I'll love it.

My Fiero is in some ways, just a beat up old car. But in one very special way, it's much more than that. It's my car. And no matter how many bad days I have with it, I'll continue to work with it. I still love cleaning it. I still love driving it. And, even though I deny it, I still love showing it off. It's my car, and I love it...

Sure would be nice to keep it out of the shop, though.

2010 Range Rover

These are the first official photographs of the redesigned Range Rover that will be making its premiere along with its facelifted Range Rover Sport sibling and the Discovery / LR3 at the New York International Auto Show. Land Rover's premium SUV has received mild styling tweaks in and out along with a series of mechanical upgrades that include the addition of a new 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine.
The design enhancements to the 2010 Range Rover include subtle exterior revisions with changes to the headlights, grille and bumper as well as the new 'three-stripe' LED indicators and redesigned three-section fender vents.
The SUV's interior benefits from new leather trim for the headlining, pillar and door casings while the facia buttons now feature a satin chrome-plated finish. Moreover, the 2010 model features a new dual view touch screen infotainment system plus what Land Rover claims to be the world's largest configurable 12-in. Thin Film Transistor (TFT) screen which is found in the instrument cluster.
The most important news under the hood concerns the replacement of the 4.2-liter Supercharged V8 with a new 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine which is the same one used in the Jaguar XFR. It develops an output of 510HP and a peak torque of 625Nm.
Land Rover supports that despite the significant hike in both power (29 percent) and torque (+12 percent), the new supercharged V8 improves fuel consumption by 7.3 percent to 19mpg UK (14.8 lt/100km or 15.6mpg US) on the EU cycle and CO2 emissions by 7.4 percent to 348g/km, compared with its 4.2-litre Supercharged predecessor.
Other improvements for the 2010 Range Rover include the more powerful braking system, the updated Terrain Response and Stability Control systems and the new surround camera system which helps make parking easier.
