What is a Crossover?

Crossovers are hot in today’s marketplace, especially the compact SUV segment. All-new models are being introduced every time we blink, including the 2008 Nissan Rogue and 2008 Buick Enclave. Examples have been around for some time, though, including the Toyota RAV4.
The widely accepted definition of a crossover SUV is a vehicle that has SUV-like function and utility, but with a chassis and drivetrain more similar to a car than a traditional truck-based SUV. Having the underpinnings of a car equates to a more comfortable ride and useable interior room, as well as typically better gas mileage because of lighter construction and smaller engines. A good majority of crossovers are front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and rarely have anything larger than a six-cylinder engine.
You can find crossovers in all shapes and sizes; the Rogue is a compact five-passenger crossover, while the Enclave is full-size and capable of seating eight. Previous models aren’t exempt from the current trend and are subject to significant redesigns; for example, the 2008 Toyota Highlander and 2008 Saturn Vue.
