GM Korea says goodbye to Daewoo, hello to Chevrolet
GM Korea says goodbye to Daewoo, hello to Chevrolet
SEOUL: GM Korea Co, the South Korean unit of US automaker General Motors Co, will officially launch the Chevrolet brand in South Korea this week, saying goodbye to Daewoo, a name that has endured in South Korea for the past 28 years, Yonhap News Agency reported the company as saying Monday.
The name of the company will officially be changed to GM Korea from GM Daewoo also from Tuesday, it added.
"The change of the company name is an evolution from a company that does export sales and also domestic sales. We are a global company that works in Korea. This is a revolutionary pivot for us and an imperative decision," GM Korea president and CEO Mike Arcamone had said, introducing the new company name and the Chevrolet brand for the first time in January.
GM Korea has already introduced three Chevrolet vehicles in South Korea - the multi-purpose vehicle Orlando, small passenger car Aveo and Chevrolet's iconic sports car the Camaro - with their deliveries scheduled to begin late next month.
The company plans to introduce an additional five Chevrolet vehicles here this year under what Arcamone has called an "unprecedentedly aggressive launch programme" designed to boost the company's domestic sales.
"This is a good change. It is in the best interest of customers, our company, its employees, shareholders, dealers, suppliers and indeed the people of Korea," he had said.
All new makeovers of former GM Daewoo cars will also come with the Chevrolet brand.
The only immediate concern for GM Korea and its officials is that many local customers, unfamiliar with the Chevrolet brand, may mistake their new vehicles as products by an entirely different or smaller manufacturer as, in South Korea, the name of a vehicle brand is almost without fail the name of its maker, a GM Korea official noted.
To prevent such confusion, the company is planning a massive launch event here Tuesday when it will also announce new marketing strategies that have "never been seen before" in South Korea for new Chevrolet vehicles, the official said.
GM Korea is struggling to increase its market share in South Korea to a double-digit number as it failed again to do so in 2010, though only by 0.5 percentage point.
The company currently is the third-largest of five automakers in South Korea, where over 80 per cent of the market is controlled by top automaker Hyundai Motor Co and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp.

Genebra 2011: Murciélago? Não! Eu sou Aventador!
Este é o Aventador (oficial), o sucessor do Murciélago. |
Huh! Design bem exótico. |

Genebra 2011: FF, A Ferrari polêmica
Faróis da FF lembram a do esportivo 458 Italia. |
Last-minute rush to settle summonses

PETALING JAYA: Frantic motorists thronged police stations and post offices nationwide to pay and avoid having their names blacklisted by the Road Transport Department.
Many more are expected to clear their summonses today as the deadline to settle traffic summonses at a discount ends today.
MyEG managing director Wong Thean Soon said www.myeg.com.my had processed around 150,000 to 200,000 payment transactions a day over the last few days.
“We also received around 500,000 summons checking requests a day for the past week.”
Bernama reported that post offices in the Klang Valley were well patronised yesterday.
A survey it conducted showed that the Taman Melawati post office was among the most packed. It was not so crowded at the Mindef post office, however.
However, it said that gaining access to the police, Myeg, and an interactive e-government website, Rilek eService was difficult due to heavy traffic.
The situation is expected to persist until 5pm today with traffic offenders expected to settle their summonses by credit cards or by debiting their accounts.
The police website posted a note, notifying motorists that the servers were running at maximum capacity and urged them to get back after 6pm if they have difficulties in checking their summons details.
Assistant administrative officer Indra Shafawan, 30, took the opportunity to pay RM50 - reduced from RM100 - for a parking offence committed at the KLIA in Sepang.
Security officer Azman Zainol, 26, said he only learned about the post offices being open through the newspapers yesterday morning.
He wasted no time going to the Taman Melawati post office to settle a traffic summons.
Clerk Anwar Lutin, 34, said that he decided to go to the Mindef post office when he learned that it was very crowded at Taman Melawati.
"I saw on the afternoon TV news that it was very crowded at Taman Melawati. So I came here (the Mindef post office)," he said.
Those who do not settle their summonses before today’s deadline will be blacklisted, barring them from renewing their driving licences and road tax.
From tomorrow, motorists will have to pay the full summons fine if they want their names removed from the blacklist.
In JOHOR BARU, the general post office saw more than 3,000 traffic offenders rushing to settle their summonses yesterday.
Supervisor Mohd Fauzan Ibrahim said four counters were opened to accommodate the crowd.
“There were a total of 2,100 people who turned up to settle their summonses on Saturday. On Friday there were 2,650,” he told The Star.
A check at the Johor Baru (South) traffic police depot also revealed a long queue of people.
In IPOH, however, the crowds were smaller.
A retired salesman, who wanted to be known as Ong, said there were fewer people at the police station compared to the past few days. However, Ong said, he had to wait for about two hours to settle his summonses.
At the post office, about 70 people waited their turn to pay.
In PENANG, some 300 people paid their traffic summonses at five counters at the general post office in Downing Street, George Town, from 8.30am to 5pm.
Many motorists also headed to the post offices in Tesco Penang, Queensbay Mall and Carrefour in Seberang Jaya.
Among those at the Downing Street post office was M. Lingeshwaren, 23.
He said he had waited six hours on Saturday at the Bayan Lepas police station, but still failed to settle his fines.
“I came at 10.30am. The queue here is much shorter,” he said.

LONGTERMER #1: Update 32, Feb 2011: Ford Telstar 2.0i4 Ghia Auto
In this blog entry, I'm updating my ride. The Ford Telstar 2.0i4 Ghia Auto. This is the 32nd Update. What happened in the month of February?
Firstly, my Front left rim hit a HUGE FAMOUS Pothole in "Jalan Burung Hantu", Kepong. I sent to repair my dent steel rim. It costs RM40 (Picture above). When repairing, I noticed that my front left tyre thread is so BALD that the "Steel Belt" is visible. (Picture below)
I was offered RM110 to change 1 pair of used (40% thread left) Continental CC1 tyres. As a result, I got 6 tyres now, 1 in the boot + 1 spare.
Also, on the 1st week of February, it's Chinese New Year.
I went house to house visitation to as far as Taman Sentosa, Klang, After visiting the Klang open house, we went to eat BAK KUT TEH followed by a drive to "NORTH PORT, KLANG". Lastly, I watched "The Green Hornet" with my friend. Very GOOD Movie. Jay Chou is so GOOD in Acting.
On the 2nd day of Chinese New Year, I drove around Damansara Uptown and SS2. I found that the NORMALLY BUSY locations became "Ghost town" (Empty). See photos below:
Above: SS2, Outside Savemart, Below, Damansara Uptown.
Above: Damansara Uptown, Below: SS2 (Ambank Row)
On February 15, I went to "Wai Heng Exhaust", Sunway, to changed my Extractor. The old OEM ones leaked and rusted. I changed to 4-2-1, Galvanised Extractor.
But it has some side effects. Engine cut off when Idling and power loss (initially). I drove to the nearest mechanic, it turns out that my "Distributor" (changed 18 months ago, Proton Eterna chop-shop part) KAPUT already.
After changing the distributor (RM480) still cannot start. The Mechanic, Mr.Wong discovered that the "Spark Plug Cable" Short circuit. Changed to "Accurex Pro" Spark plug cable. RM120 poorer. Total RM600 poorer.
For this month, I used RM270 of RON 95 fuel. I noticed when I pump ESSOMOBIL, my car is 10% more fuel efficient compared to Shell OR Petronas.
Oh! ONE MORE THING, My Telstar is UP FOR SALE AGAIN! This time its SERIOUS! Any takers?
